How it works
Getting the depth right
Depending on the size, shape and depth you want to cover, your product usage will vary. These calculators give you a solid estimate — round up slightly rather than down, since it is much easier to spread a little extra than to order a second load.
- In most cases two inches of depth is recommended for decorative stones.
- Larger stone generally needs more depth to fully cover the ground beneath.
- For mulch, 2–3 inches suppresses weeds while still letting the soil breathe.
- For a new lawn, 4–6 inches of topsoil gives roots something to work with.
- Lay landscape fabric underneath to keep weeds from coming through.
